چکیده

Appraisal theory explains the elicitation of emotional reactions as a consequence of subjective evaluations based on personal needs, goals, desires, abilities, and beliefs. According to the appraisal approach, each emotion is caused by a characteristic pattern of appraisals, and different emotions are associated with different appraisals. This paper presents the DEBECO architecture, a computational framework for modeling the appraisal process. DEBECO is based upon three core coherence principles: belief coherence, desire coherence and belief-desire coherence. These three coherence mechanisms allow two elementary types of goals to be represented: approach and avoidance goals. By way of concrete simulation examples, it is shown how discrete emotions such as anger, pride, sadness, shame, surprise, relief and disappointment emerge out of these principles. The framework allows the integration of a variety of empirical findings about cognitive emotional congruence effects and shows how phenomena as diverse as reasoning, belief updating, or eliciting of emotional reactions can be subsumed under the same basic underlying processes.

Rereading the Interpretation of "There is no compulsion in religion"in the Light of the Theory of Coherence and Continuity of the Qur'an and Its Relation to Freedom of Religion and Belief

The Quranic sentence "There is no compulsion in religion" has been interpreted differently by commentators in different periods. Some has taken it as the permission for freedom of belief from the verse and some has considered it in conflict with the verses of fighting and apostasy. The distinction and diversity of the commentators' understanding of the verses of the Qur'an is related to the men...

Three Kinds of Coherentism

This paper aims to show what makes coherentism attractive in comparison to its main competitor, foundationalism. It also aims to show that constraint satisfaction is not the most attractive way to give content to the notion of coherence. In order to achieve these purposes, the paper distinguishes between epistemic, constructive and integrated coherentism. Epistemic coherentism treats coherence ...

The Functions of ‘Surah Coherence’ in Interpretation Applied to Allameh Tabatabai’s al-Mizan and Sayyid Qutb’s Fi Zilal al-Quran

‘Surah coherence’ is an important aspect of the Quranic language, which, due to its unique role in interpretation, has been highly regarded by commentators and Quranic scholars, especially over the last half a century. According to this theory, each surah is centered around a main issue in such a way that all the topics of the surah create an all-encompassing unity. The present study intends to...

Functions, Creatures, Learning, Emotion

I propose a conceptual framework for emotions according to which they are best understood as the feedback mechanism a creature possesses in virtue of its function to learn. More specifically, emotions can be neatly modeled as a measure of harmony in a certain kind of constraint satisfaction problem. This measure can be used as error for weight adjustment (learning) in an unsupervised connection...

Coherence as Constraint Satisfaction

This paper provides a computational characterization of coherence that applies to a wide range of philosophical problems and psychological phenomena. Maximizing coherence is a matter of maximizing satisfaction of a set of positive and negative constraints. After comparing five algorithms for maximizing coherence, we show how our characterization of coherence overcomes traditional philosophical ...
